A teenager in Naogaon has been fined Tk 20,000 for allegedly modifying his motorcycle’s exhaust to produce excessively loud noise and causing public disturbance.
The teenager, identified as Saklain Mostak, also known as Ratul, was detained around noon on Tuesday in front of the District Council Park gate at Muktir Mor in Naogaon town.
According to locals, the teenager had been riding a Suzuki Gixxer 150cc motorcycle around different roads in the town for several days, producing loud noises that frightened pedestrians.
On Tuesday, several locals stopped the motorcycle near the park gate and informed traffic police. Police later seized the motorcycle and filed a case against him.
Residents said reckless motorcycle riding, particularly by teenagers, increases around the time students leave Naogaon Government Girls’ High School and PM Girls’ High School. They called for increased monitoring by the authorities.
The teenager’s mother said her son often refused to listen to his parents and had pressured them into buying the motorcycle.
“He earns some money from small online jobs and used his own money to modify the motorcycle. We feel helpless dealing with him,” she said.
Traffic Police Sergeant Jagadish Chandra said modifying a motorcycle’s exhaust to create excessive noise is an offence under the Road Transport Act.
“As he did not have a driving licence and had modified the exhaust to produce excessive noise, a case was filed and he was fined Tk 20,000. The motorcycle was also seized,” he said.
Police will remove the modified exhaust from the motorcycle and will not return it, the sergeant added.
The incident comes days after a fatal motorcycle accident in Naogaon. On August 18, former accountant of Naogaon 250-bed General Hospital Abdus Sattar, 65, was killed after being hit by a speeding motorcycle at Keder Mor in the town.
