Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman has said there is no fertilizer shortage in the country and that adequate stocks are available. He also said approval has been given to import a large quantity of fertilizer to prevent any possible shortage.
The adviser made the remarks at a regular press briefing at the Secretariat on Tuesday, where he presented information on the government’s recent activities and various issues, including fertilizer supplies.
The briefing was informed that more than 1.3 million metric tonnes (1.365 million tonnes) of fertilizer are currently in stock in warehouses across the country. During the same period of the 2025–26 fiscal year, the stock stood at 1.3 million tonnes.
Referring to reports published in newspapers about irregularities in fertilizer distribution in some areas, Zahed Ur Rahman said the government was aware of the issue and was taking prompt action.
Acknowledging that there had been some irregularities in the distribution process, the adviser said the government was planning to make some changes to the system in the interests of farmers and the people.
“This has created some uncertainty and problems in adjusting to the new process,” he said. “In some cases, dealers are not collecting the fertilizer allocated to them. Such incidents are creating problems in some areas. However, we hope the situation will not escalate.”
The adviser also spoke about various aspects of the country’s gas supply, the international situation and related challenges. He said it would take around two years for the country to reach a significantly better position in terms of gas availability.
“That does not mean the situation will be worse than before,” he said.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Andalib Rahman Partha, State Minister for Information Yaser Khan Chowdhury, Information Secretary Mahbuba Farzana and Principal Information Officer of the Press Information Department Syed Abdal Ahmed were also present at the press briefing.
