A Dhaka court has extended until September 30 the deadline for submitting the investigation report in the sensational murder case of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi.
This is the 129th extension of the deadline since the case was filed.
The report was scheduled to be submitted today, but the investigation officer failed to do so. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam granted the prosecution’s time plea and set the new deadline.
Sagar and Runi were brutally murdered at their rented flat in West Rajabazar, Dhaka, on February 11, 2012, in the presence of their four-year-old son, Mahir Sarwar Megh.
Runi’s brother, Nawser Alam, filed the case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
The Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police initially investigated the case before it was handed over to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). RAB failed to submit the report despite receiving 111 deadline extensions over 12 years.
On September 30, 2024, the High Court ordered the Home Ministry to form a high-powered task force and removed RAB from the investigation.
The ministry subsequently formed a four-member task force on October 23, 2024, giving it six months to complete the investigation.
On April 26, 2026, the High Court granted the task force another six months to complete the investigation and submit its report.
