Malaysian immigration authorities have detained 528 migrants, including 245 Bangladeshis, in a series of raids conducted at eight construction sites across the country.
The three-day operation, dubbed “Ops Sasar,” was carried out from August 25 to 27, involving 414 personnel from the Immigration Department, National Registration Department, Royal Malaysia Police, National Anti-Drug Agency and Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency.
Datuk Basri Othman, director of the Immigration Enforcement Division, said the raids were conducted based on complaints and information received from local residents about the presence and activities of migrants in the areas.
He said the main objective was to ensure compliance with immigration laws and identify any violations.
Authorities checked 678 people during the operation and detained 528 migrants over various immigration offences. The detainees included 450 men and 79 women.
Among those detained were 245 Bangladeshis, 119 Indonesians, 23 Indians, 100 Myanmar nationals, four Nepalis and 37 citizens of other countries.
The violations included failure to carry valid identification or documents, breaches of pass conditions, overstaying, using unrecognised cards and other offences under immigration laws.
The detainees will be held at various immigration detention depots for investigation and further legal action.
