The bodies of nine of the 16 Bangladeshis killed in a devastating fire at a sofa factory in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, have arrived in Bangladesh.
The bodies reached Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Thursday aboard Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG-430.
The fire broke out on August 9 at a sofa factory in the Manfuhah and Musa Sanaiya areas of Riyadh, killing 16 Bangladeshi workers.
According to a list of identified victims provided by the Bangladesh Embassy in Saudi Arabia, seven of the nine victims were from Atrai upazila of Naogaon. They were Md Farid, Rubel Pramanik, Mohon Ali, Sumon Ali, Kolimuddin, Sohel Rana and Abdul Jalil Sardar.
Sources said the workers were sleeping inside the factory after finishing work when the fire broke out. Allegedly, the factory’s main gate was locked from outside, preventing the workers from escaping. All 16 Bangladeshi workers died in the blaze.
Airport authorities said the bodies would be handed over to the victims’ families after completion of the necessary formalities.
