Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has adopted comprehensive security and traffic management measures for the upcoming Janmashtami celebrations in the capital, with additional personnel to be deployed at key points and along the procession route.
The measures were finalised at a coordination meeting on security, law and order and traffic management held at DMP Headquarters on Thursday morning. DMP Additional Commissioner (DB) Md Shafiqul Islam chaired the meeting.
The meeting discussed security arrangements for Janmashtami, which will be celebrated in Dhaka on September 4.
As part of the plan, police will deploy pickets, patrol teams, CCTV cameras, foot patrols, rooftop teams, Honda mobile teams, Detective Branch (DB) personnel, plainclothes intelligence teams, SWAT and bomb disposal units, along with traffic police.
The meeting also decided that the Janmashtami procession must follow the designated route and be completed within the specified time.
Participants urged organisers and devotees to avoid using loudspeakers and microphones during prayer and Azan times. They were also asked to appoint their own volunteers, refrain from carrying bags or bundles during the procession and immediately inform police about any suspicious person or object.
Md Shafiqul Islam said Janmashtami is an important religious festival for the Hindu community in the capital and assured that the DMP would ensure adequate security for its peaceful and safe celebration.
He said deputy commissioners of the respective DMP divisions would hold separate coordination meetings with the concerned Janmashtami celebration committees and maintain round-the-clock communication with them.
He also urged all agencies involved in the celebrations to properly perform their respective responsibilities.
The additional commissioner said volunteers assigned to the celebrations must wear designated vests, while plainclothes security personnel and line forces would also be deployed.
He urged organisers and participants to remain cautious around electrical lines to prevent accidents.
“Every moment of Janmashtami is important to us. We hope the festival will be completed peacefully with everyone’s cooperation,” he said.
DMP Joint Commissioner (Operations) Mohammad Shahidullah presented the overall security plan through a PowerPoint presentation.
Senior DMP officials, representatives of various government agencies and leaders of Janmashtami celebration committees attended the meeting and shared their views.
DMP Additional Commissioner (Estate, Development and ICT) Mohammad Osman Gani, joint commissioners, deputy commissioners and police officials of different ranks were also present.
Representatives of the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad, Dhaka Mahanagar Sarbojanin Puja Committee, Ramakrishna Math and Mission, ISKCON Bangladesh and other relevant organisations attended the meeting.
