The trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States, has been scheduled to begin on June 5, 2028, nearly 27 years after the attacks.
A US military judge set the trial date for Mohammed and three co-defendants at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility.
The judge rejected prosecutors’ proposal to begin the trial in January 2027, saying more time was needed to resolve pre-trial legal issues and evidence-related matters.
Mohammed was captured in Pakistan in 2003. His case has since been delayed by years of legal proceedings, including disputes over evidence, detention and alleged torture during his time in CIA custody.
The September 11 attacks killed nearly 3,000 people after hijackers seized four commercial airliners and crashed them into the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in Virginia, and a field in Pennsylvania.
The long-delayed trial is expected to be one of the most closely watched terrorism cases in US history.
