Sirajganj: Two people, including a CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver, were killed and another passenger was injured after the auto-rickshaw crashed into the rear of a truck parked by the roadside in Sirajganj Sadar upazila early Friday morning.
The accident occurred around 5:00am in the Bahuti Bottola area of Shialkol Union on the Sirajganj-Nalka regional highway.
The deceased were identified as Ashik, 35, son of Ali Akhtar Fakir of Kuthirchar village in Kamarkhand upazila, and Thakur Haldar, 70, son of Gutu Rajbangshi of Kalinja village in Raiganj upazila. The injured passenger, Bishnu Haldar, was admitted to Sirajganj Medical College Hospital.
Sirajganj Sadar Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Shafiqul Islam confirmed the incident.
According to locals, the CNG-run auto-rickshaw was carrying several passengers from the Bazar Bhadra Ghat area of Kamarkhand to Sirajganj town. When it reached Bahuti Bottola, it crashed into the rear of a truck parked on the roadside at high speed.
The impact left the auto-rickshaw badly mangled, seriously injuring the driver and Thakur Haldar. They died at the scene despite attempts by local residents to rescue them.
Local resident Zahurul Islam said they rushed to the scene after hearing a loud crash and found the auto-rickshaw wedged into the back of the truck.
Sirajganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rakibul Islam said the relatives of the deceased had taken the bodies home before police arrived. Necessary legal procedures are underway.
