Two young men were killed following a clash triggered by an argument at a hotel bar in Cox’s Bazar town on Thursday night.
The deceased were identified as Nazibul Haque Rashed, 29, and Mohammad Salman, 28. Their detailed addresses were not immediately available.
The incident took place at around 11:30pm at the bar of Renaissance Hotel in the Jhautola area.
Mohammad Ali, officer-in-charge of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Police Station, confirmed the incident.
According to police and eyewitnesses, Rashed and several other young men were sitting at the hotel’s second-floor bar when an argument broke out among them.
At one point, one side allegedly called in several others from outside, who entered the bar and stabbed Rashed.
He was rescued in critical condition and taken to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Following news of the incident, tension spread in the Fisherighat area around midnight. Later, local residents allegedly caught and severely beat Salman in the Madhyam Nuniachhara area before handing him over to police. He was taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment on Friday morning.
Police said Rashed’s body has been kept at the Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue.
Md Ahidur Rahman, additional superintendent of police (Crime and Operations) in Cox’s Bazar, said police had collected CCTV footage from the hotel bar and were reviewing it to identify those involved. Several police teams were working to arrest the suspects.
He said investigators were examining how the incident began and who was involved. Various pieces of evidence had also been collected from the scene.
Police said the Renaissance Hotel bar would remain closed until evidence collection and other legal procedures were completed. Investigators are also examining whether there were any shortcomings in the bar’s security arrangements and entry controls at the time of the incident.
