Customs intelligence officials have seized three luxury cars from a five-star hotel in Cox’s Bazar over allegations that used car parts were imported and assembled locally to evade customs duties.
The cars were seized from the parking area of Ocean Paradise Hotel on Friday after the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate kept them under surveillance from early morning.
The individuals associated with the vehicles failed to produce valid documents proving their legal import or purchase, officials said.
According to customs officials, a scheme has been uncovered in which various car parts are imported under the declaration of “used car parts” and later assembled into complete luxury vehicles.
The cars are reportedly from Japanese brands, while their exact models, engine capacities and market values will be determined through further investigation.
Officials said similar methods have been used to assemble luxury vehicles such as BMWs, Toyota Crown and Royal Saloon models, and Range Rovers.
The investigation began after customs intelligence received information about several consignments imported through Mongla Port on August 27 as used car parts.
Officials found that the imported components could be assembled into complete vehicles within a short time.
The seized vehicles have been taken into customs custody. Authorities said legal action will follow if violations, smuggling or duty evasion are established.
