Brahmanbaria protesters threaten to foil NCP programme

A group of madrasa students in Brahmanbaria staged a protest against remarks made by National Citizen Party (NCP) lawmaker Hasnat Abdullah over the suspension of musical programmes and boat races in the district.

The protesters demanded that Hasnat publicly apologise for his remarks.

They warned that unless he withdraws the comments and apologises, they will boycott and attempt to foil the NCP’s scheduled programme in Brahmanbaria on Saturday.

The Qawmi Students Unity Council brought out the protest march late Friday night from the Jamia Yunusia Madrasa area.

The procession passed through the city and ended in front of the Brahmanbaria Press Club, where the protesters held a brief rally.

The NCP is scheduled to hold an organisational coordination meeting and political workshop at the Brahmanbaria District Shilpakala Academy at 4pm Saturday. NCP leaders, including Sarjis Alam, are expected to attend.

Police said the protest passed off without any untoward incident.

Authorities have increased surveillance ahead of the NCP programme amid the heightened tension.
