A schoolteacher was killed after falling from a rickshaw when a snatcher riding a motorcycle tried to pull her bag in front of the South Plaza of the National Parliament complex in Dhaka on Saturday morning.
The victim was identified as Mosa Ranjina Parvin, headteacher of Bagbari Girls’ Government Primary School in Bogura.
The incident occurred around 6:30am as Ranjina was travelling by rickshaw to the Islamia Eye Hospital in Farmgate for a medical appointment. She had arrived in Dhaka from Bogura the previous night and got off at Gabtoli bus terminal early Saturday before taking a rickshaw to the hospital.
When the rickshaw reached the South Plaza area, a motorcycle-riding snatcher approached from behind and grabbed her bag. The force of the pull caused her to fall from the rickshaw, leaving her with a severe head injury.
She was rescued and taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner of Police Ibne Mizan said police were working to identify the motorcycle and those involved in the incident.
