The Chattogram district administration has taken an initiative to make Patenga Sea Beach cleaner, safer and more tourist-friendly by installing modern dustbins and wash blocks and improving its overall environment.
District Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mia announced the plan on Saturday while joining a cleanliness and awareness campaign at the beach organised by the Beach Management Committee with administrative support.
He said the beach would be redesigned in harmony with nature, while shops failing to meet prescribed standards for food quality, sanitation and cleanliness would face notices and action.
The number of shops at the beach would also be reduced as it is higher than necessary, he said.
“We want a permanent and sustainable solution,” the district commissioner said, adding that the administration, Chattogram City Corporation, CDA, police and the Beach Management Committee were working together to improve the beach.
He said Ansar members would be deployed to strengthen security and their number could be increased if necessary. Tourists were urged to follow safety instructions and avoid entering the sea despite warnings from security personnel and tourist police.
Zahidul Islam also stressed that maintaining cleanliness was a shared responsibility of tourists, traders and government agencies.
The campaign began with a rally and distribution of awareness leaflets among tourists and traders. Officials, volunteers and local residents also cleaned the beach walkway and surrounding areas.
The cleanliness drive is part of the district administration’s “Aesthetic Chattogram” initiative launched on July 25 to promote a cleaner environment and help prevent dengue and other diseases.
