Former railways minister Nurul Islam Sujon has been shown arrested in a murder case filed over the death of a man during the July Uprising in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque passed the order on Sunday (August 30) after hearing a petition from police.

Jatrabari Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Zakir Hossain, the investigating officer in the case, filed the petition on August 19, seeking to show Sujon arrested in the case. The court later fixed August 30 for a hearing in the presence of the accused.

Sujon was brought to the courtroom under tight police security.During the hearing, state lawyer Harun-or-Rashid supported the police plea, while defence lawyer Morshed Alam Shaheen opposed it.

Sujon himself addressed the court and questioned the legal basis for showing him arrested in another case after he had secured bail in a separate case.

“I have been involved in politics in Panchagarh for 40 years. I was elected MP from there and most recently served as the railways minister,” he said.

He told the court that his name was not mentioned in the first information report (FIR) or the forwarding report of the case.

“It has been two years since the case was filed. My name is not in the FIR, nor is it in the forwarding report. Yet I have been arrested in this case,” he said, urging the judge to examine the case docket and determine whether the arrest was legally justified.

Sujon said anyone found guilty should face trial, but questioned the basis of the allegations against him.

Police, however, said in their petition that Sujon was involved in the incident and that showing him arrested in the case was necessary.

After hearing both sides, the court ordered that Sujon be shown arrested in the case.

According to the case statement, Parvez Mia participated in the July Uprising on August 5, 2024. He was allegedly injured by gunfire fired by the accused around 5pm that day.

He was initially taken to Mugda Medical College Hospital and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated. Doctors at the hospital declared him dead.

A murder case was filed with Jatrabari Police Station on October 29, 2024.

Sujon was arrested from Bangladesh Specialized Hospital in Dhaka’s Shyamoli on the night of September 16, 2024. He has since been shown arrested in several other cases and taken on remand. He is currently in jail.
