A Dhaka court has barred two officials of the National Security Intelligence (NSI) from leaving the country over separate allegations involving abuse of power, bribery, extortion, illicit wealth and money laundering.
The officials are NSI Additional Director MSK Shaheen and Joint Director Badrul Ahmed.
Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Shahjahan Kabir issued the order on Monday (31 August) following separate applications filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
ACC Assistant Director Bilkis Akter submitted the applications seeking travel bans against the two officials.
According to the applications, the officials were allegedly attempting to leave the country. If they managed to flee abroad while the inquiries or investigations were underway, recovering allegedly laundered or illegally acquired funds could become difficult.
The ACC said an inquiry is ongoing into allegations against MSK Shaheen involving abuse of power, bribery, extortion and acquisition of assets beyond his known sources of income.
A separate investigation is underway into a specific money-laundering allegation against Badrul Ahmed.
After reviewing the applications and supporting documents, the court approved the ACC’s requests and directed the relevant authorities to take necessary steps to prevent the two officials from leaving the country.
