Hearing in murder case against Hasina deferred to Sept 24

A Dhaka court has postponed the hearing on framing charges against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 33 others in the murder case over the death of truck driver Md Hossain during the July 2024 anti-discrimination student movement.

The hearing has been rescheduled for September 24.

Judge Robiul Alam of Dhaka Special Judge Court-4 passed the order on Tuesday after former state minister for information and communication technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak, an accused in the case, was not produced before the court from jail.

The prosecution sought more time, and the court granted the petition and fixed the new date.

According to the case documents and investigation report, Hossain was shot dead in the Chand Udyan area of Mohammadpur on July 19, 2024, during the anti-discrimination student movement. He was returning home after leaving his truck in Gabtoli when he was shot.

Hossain’s mother, Rina Begum, filed the murder case with Mohammadpur Police Station on August 31, 2024.

Following an investigation, Sub-Inspector Akramuzzaman of Mohammadpur Police Station submitted the charge sheet to the court on November 23, 2025, naming 34 people, including Sheikh Hasina, as accused.

Other prominent accused include Awami League General Secretary and former Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former foreign minister Hasan Mahmud, former minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak, and banned Bangladesh Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain and General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Enan.

Several other accused, including Asif Ahmed, Tarekuzzaman Rajib, Sheikh Bazlur Rahman and Nur Mohammad Sentu, are absconding.

Four accused are currently in jail, including former state minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak and former lawmaker Sadek Khan, while 10 others are out on bail.

The case is currently at the charge-framing stage. The court will hear on September 24 whether formal charges should be framed against the accused.
