India calls Hasina extradition a ‘legal matter’

India has reiterated that the extradition of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is a legal matter and will be dealt with accordingly, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.

Responding to questions about Hasina’s reported plan to return to Bangladesh in December, Jaiswal said there had been no change in India’s approach to the issue.

“Any extradition matter is a legal issue, and it will be dealt with accordingly,” he said at a media briefing.

Bangladesh has requested India to extradite Hasina to face legal proceedings in the country.

India has said the request is being examined in accordance with the applicable legal and judicial procedures.

The issue has remained a major point of contention in Bangladesh-India relations since Hasina left Bangladesh and went to India in August 2024.

More recently, Bangladesh has urged India to expedite its response to the extradition request, while Indian officials have said the matter is under legal review.
