Prime Minister’s Adviser and spokesperson Mahdi Amin has highlighted 48 achievements of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) over its 48-year political journey.
In a post on his verified Facebook account on Tuesday evening marking the BNP’s 48th founding anniversary, Amin said the party’s achievements and successes over the years were extensive.
He said he had selected 48 notable achievements based on his personal observations and understanding.
Among the achievements he highlighted were the introduction of “Bangladeshi nationalism,” President Ziaur Rahman’s 19-point programme, the establishment of multiparty democracy, press and freedom of expression, and a foreign policy based on national sovereignty and dignity.
He also credited the BNP with launching export-oriented garment industries and overseas manpower exports, introducing free-market economic policies, establishing Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board, Bangladesh Open University and National University, and introducing compulsory primary education nationwide.
Other achievements on his list included the introduction of VAT, establishment of the Securities and Exchange Commission, enactment of the Acid Crime Control Act and Environmental Conservation Act, expansion of women’s education, establishment of the Coast Guard, opening mobile telecommunications to the private sector and formation of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).
Amin also listed the construction of the country’s first flyover, creation of separate ministries for Liberation War Affairs and Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, establishment of an independent Anti-Corruption Commission, and expansion of healthcare services at the upazila level.
Among more recent initiatives, he cited Khaleda Zia’s Vision 2030, Tarique Rahman’s 31-point state reform programme, debt relief for farmers, the introduction of farmer and family cards, and monthly honorariums for religious leaders.
Amin concluded his list by describing the BNP’s current political approach as people-oriented and participatory, with national interests and sovereignty at its core.
