Bus services between Jamalpur and Dhaka have been suspended since Thursday morning as transport workers demand greater security for drivers and other staff on highways.
Harunur Rashid, joint convener of the Jamalpur Bus-Minibus Workers’ Union, confirmed the suspension to the media.
He said the decision was announced at a press conference at the Jamalpur Inter-District Bus Terminal on Wednesday night.
The move follows an incident on August 31 in which four people were killed in a collision between a Rajib Paribahan bus and an auto-rickshaw in the Laherikanda area of Jamalpur Sadar.
The following morning, a group of people stopped and vandalised two Rajib Paribahan buses in the Nandina Bazar area. The bus drivers and their assistants were allegedly assaulted, and cash was reportedly taken from them.
“Following the incident, transport workers have been gripped by a sense of insecurity and anger, prompting them to suspend bus services,” Harunur Rashid said.
