Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Shafiqur Rahman has accused the government of breaking its promises and deceiving the people, saying it would not be forgiven unless it fulfilled its commitments.
“We will remain on the streets until the people’s demands are met,” he said while addressing a roadside rally in Shimrail of Narayanganj’s Siddhirganj upazila on Saturday morning during the Dhaka-Chattogram long march.
Shafiqur Rahman said, “This government is deceiving and cheating the people. It makes promises and then breaks them. The people will not forgive them.”
Recalling the July mass uprising of 2024, the Jamaat chief said, “Your comrades shed blood on these very roads in the struggle against the autocracy. Their demands have not been fulfilled. We have taken to the streets to fulfil those demands. InshaAllah, we will return home only after achieving them.”
Highlighting the demands for implementation of the public mandate expressed through the referendum and the spirit of the July mass uprising, he said, “We have taken to the streets to implement the people’s verdict in the referendum. We have taken to the streets to uphold the spirit of the July mass uprising.”
“We have taken to the streets to restore gas supplies to your homes. We have taken to the streets to ensure electricity and lighting in your homes,” he added.
Referring to the unity of the 11-party alliance, Shafiqur Rahman said, “The 11 parties are with you, and you are with the 11 parties. InshaAllah, Allah will accept our united efforts. We will succeed and build a Bangladesh free from fascism.”
The Dhaka-Chattogram long march began from the capital on Saturday morning as part of the 11-party alliance’s programme to press home its six-point demands.
Leaders of the alliance joined the roadside rally at Shimrail in Narayanganj. After Shafiqur Rahman’s speech, the long march resumed its journey towards Chattogram.
The rally was chaired by Maulana Abdul Jabbar, Ameer of Narayanganj Metropolitan Jamaat-e-Islami.
Opposition Chief Whip and National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Chairman Col (retd) Oli Ahmed, Khelafat Majlis Ameer Maulana Mamunul Haque, Jamaat-e-Islami Central Working Committee member Maulana Abdul Moinuddin Ahmed, and NCP Joint Organising Secretary and Narayanganj lawmaker Abdullah Al Amin also addressed the rally.
