Bangladesh Post Office has transported around 400 tonnes of commercial and consumer goods through its upgraded Speed Post service over the past two months as it expands its logistics operations beyond traditional mail delivery.
Director General of the Postal Directorate Kazi Asadul Islam confirmed the development in an interview on Saturday.
The service transports legal, non-prohibited goods, including motorcycles, refrigerators, air conditioners, induction cookers and agricultural sprayers. It charges Tk 10 for the first kilogram and Tk 5 for each additional kilogram. A digital tariff calculator has also been added to the postal service’s central website.
The Post Office has set delivery targets of 24 hours from district hubs to Dhaka, 48 hours for inter-district consignments and up to 96 hours for remote areas. International shipments continue to be handled through the Express Mail Service (EMS).
Hazardous items, including flammable substances, toxic chemicals, pressurised gas cylinders and ammunition, are excluded from the service.
As part of its modernisation drive, the postal authority has introduced 50 electric motorbikes for urban deliveries and fully automated operations at the Central Mail Processing Centre in Tejgaon.
The Dhaka GPO is also being expanded into a dedicated sorting hub for international cargo to ease pressure on the Kamalapur Railway Mail Terminal.
