Police have submitted a charge sheet against 22 people, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, in a murder case over the killing of Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal activist Riazul Talukder during the July uprising in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area.

The investigating officer has also sought arrest warrants against 16 accused, including Hasina and former minister Obaidul Quader, who are currently absconding.

Inspector Najib Ahmed of the Anti-Terrorism Unit, the investigating officer, submitted the charge sheet on August 19, police said.

The court has scheduled September 8 to hear whether it will accept the charge sheet.

Other prominent accused include former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former state minister A J M Enamul Haque, former Dhaka-5 MP Mashiur Rahman Molla Sajal, former MP Iqbal Hossain Apu and Nahim Razzaq.

According to the case documents, thousands of students and members of the public were taking part in a procession at the Jatrabari intersection around 5pm on August 4, 2024, as part of the one-point movement.

The case statement alleges that leaders and activists of the then ruling Awami League and its affiliated organisations opened indiscriminate fire on protesters following instructions from then-prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Riazul Talukder was shot during the incident and later died while undergoing treatment.

His brother Rubel Talukder filed the murder case with Jatrabari Police Station on September 12, 2024.
