Indian rescue teams continued searching through the rubble of a collapsed five-storey building in New Delhi on Monday, a day after the incident killed at least six people, officials said.

Emergency workers fear that more people may still be trapped beneath the debris.

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), which treated victims of the collapse, said 10 people were brought to its trauma centre.

“Out of the 10 patients, five were brought dead, while one patient who was in critical condition later succumbed to his injuries,” AIIMS said in a statement.

Disaster response teams, firefighters and police have been deployed to the site, using heavy machinery and sniffer dogs to search for possible survivors trapped beneath the rubble.

The collapse occurred in the Satya Niketan area, which is home to hundreds of university students living in densely populated accommodation.

Authorities have not yet said what caused the five-storey building to collapse, and rescue operations were continuing.

Building collapses are relatively common in India, where ageing structures, poor construction standards and unauthorised buildings often pose serious safety risks. Illegal and poorly regulated construction remains a persistent problem in many rapidly expanding urban areas.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the incident as “distressing”.

The tragedy has once again drawn attention to concerns over building safety and the condition of ageing and densely occupied structures in India’s major cities.
