A young man died after allegedly being beaten by members of the Ansar force at a Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) office in Tejgaon, Dhaka, on Tuesday.

The approximately 25-year-old man was detained around 7:30am on suspicion of theft and allegedly beaten severely.

He was later taken unconscious to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead around 3:30pm, said Inspector Habibur Rahman, in-charge of the hospital police camp.

The body has been kept at the hospital morgue for an autopsy, while authorities are trying to establish the victim’s identity, he said.

Mohammad Saiful, an office assistant at the BTCL office, said three young men entered the premises in the morning by climbing over the boundary wall, allegedly intending to steal.

“Officials and employees noticed them and chased them. Two managed to flee, while one was caught and later handed over to Ansar members,” he said.

According to Saiful, the youth sustained critical injuries after being beaten by the Ansar members and became unconscious. He was subsequently taken to the hospital.

Attempts were being made to obtain comments from the Ansar authorities regarding the allegation.

Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman said police were looking into the incident.

“Our officers went to the scene after receiving the information,” he said.
