An 18-year-old woman was hacked to death after unidentified assailants entered her home in Madaripur’s Kalikapur area on Tuesday night and fled with her iPhone.
The victim, Ivy Akter, was the wife of Qatar-based expatriate Mohammad Ferdous and the daughter of Aslam Sharif of the same area.
Police and local residents said Ivy had been staying at her uncle Kalam Sharif’s home since childhood due to her family’s financial hardship. She married Ferdous about a year ago. After her husband recently returned to Qatar, Ivy came back to her uncle’s house for a visit.
On Tuesday evening, Kalam went to a nearby mosque for prayers while his wife went to Madaripur town to see a doctor, leaving Ivy alone at home.
At around 8pm, Kalam returned and found Ivy lying in a pool of blood on the floor. Hearing his cries, neighbours rushed to the house and informed police.
Police recovered the body and sent it to Madaripur 250-bed District Hospital for autopsy.
Madaripur Sadar Model Police Station OC Abul Kalam Azad said Ivy had severe injuries to her head and that police were investigating the motive.
“Besides robbery or personal issues, we are looking into whether there was any other motive behind the killing,” he said.
No one had been detained as of Wednesday morning. Police said efforts were underway to identify and arrest those involved.
