Former Indian foreign secretary and Rajya Sabha member Harsh Vardhan Shringla has said India should not be held responsible for statements made by former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina while she is staying in India.
Shringla’s remarks come amid renewed debate over Hasina’s political activities from India and their impact on Bangladesh-India relations.
New Delhi has previously maintained that it had no role in a virtual interaction involving Hasina and that the Indian government does not endorse views expressed at such private events.
The clarification followed a virtual media interaction held in New Delhi in August, where Hasina addressed political issues concerning Bangladesh.
Bangladesh had urged India to prevent its territory from being used for political activities that could create instability in the country.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs subsequently said the event was organised by a private media organisation and that the government had no involvement in it.
The issue has remained a sensitive point in bilateral relations, particularly as Bangladesh has repeatedly raised concerns over Hasina’s statements from India.
