Apple unveils iPhone 18 Pro with dynamic-aperture main camera

Apple has unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, featuring a new 48-megapixel main camera with a variable-aperture system, marking a major upgrade to the iPhone’s photography capabilities.

The new camera uses six thin blades to adjust the aperture, allowing more or less light to reach the sensor depending on shooting conditions.

In low-light environments, the aperture can open wider to capture more light, potentially improving night-time photography and reducing the time needed for night-mode shots.

The variable aperture also gives users greater control over depth of field, allowing them to create sharper backgrounds or stronger background blur depending on the aperture setting.

The feature brings the iPhone closer to the level of dedicated cameras in terms of optical control.

Apple described the camera system as its “biggest camera improvement in years”, with the new sensor and aperture mechanism designed to improve both image quality and creative flexibility.

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max also come with Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, built using 2-nanometre technology, along with improved graphics performance and a larger cooling system.

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 for 256GB, while the Pro Max starts at $1,299. Pre-orders begin on September 12, with sales starting September 18.
