The physical condition of former Bangladesh Chhatra Union president Meghmallar Basu has reportedly improved, according to his associates, although he remains under intensive care at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Doctors have said his condition is now better than before and is showing signs of improvement, his associates said on Wednesday night.

There is also hope that he may regain consciousness by Thursday if his condition continues to improve.

Basu was found seriously ill near the gate of Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka at around 12:30am on Monday.

He was subsequently taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors initially suspected poisoning and carried out gastric lavage before admitting him to a general ward.

His condition later deteriorated and he developed breathing difficulties, prompting doctors to transfer him to the intensive care unit.

According to his associates, Basu had a relatively weak immune system.

Mucus had accumulated in his lungs while he was unconscious, making it difficult for him to clear his airways on his own. Doctors therefore placed him in the ICU for close monitoring and to provide necessary treatment.

Basu, a former president of Bangladesh Chhatra Union and a central council member of the National People’s Action, remains under medical supervision as treatment continues.

The latest update has brought some relief to his family, friends and political associates, who have been closely monitoring his condition.
