At least 14 people were killed and 11 others injured in an explosion at a temporary site used to store weapons and remnants of war near the town of Sarmada in Syria’s Idlib province.
Syria’s state television reported the incident on Wednesday, September 9. Reuters and The Associated Press also confirmed the blast.
The Syrian Defence Ministry said weapons and war remnants had been temporarily stored at the site before being transferred elsewhere. Several ministry personnel were among those injured.
Civil defence and firefighting units were deployed immediately after the explosion, but a series of secondary blasts hampered firefighting efforts. Thick smoke continued to rise from the site for several hours.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of the initial explosion.
Earlier on September 1, an ammunition-laden vehicle exploded unexpectedly in the Binnish area of Idlib, killing five people and seriously injuring several others, according to the Defence Ministry.
