Jhenaidah: A Union Parishad (UP) member was hacked to death allegedly in an attack by members of a rival group in Harinakundu upazila of Jhenaidah. The incident took place around 8:30pm on Wednesday (September 9) in the Bhayna Bazar area of the upazila.
The deceased was Monayem Hossain, son of late Abul Mondal of Kalishankarpur village in Bhayna Union. He was a member of Ward No. 9 of Bhayna Union Parishad and the ward president of the now-banned Awami League.
According to police and local sources, Monayem was standing near the Bhayna Bazar School around 8:30pm when several unidentified men from the rival group attacked him with locally made weapons. He sustained serious injuries.
Hearing his screams, people from the surrounding area rushed to the spot, rescued him and took him to Kushtia Medical College Hospital. Doctors there declared him dead after he was brought to the hospital.
His body is currently at the morgue of Kushtia Medical College Hospital.
Harinakundu Police Station Officer-in-Charge Masum Khan said they were yet to confirm who carried out the attack. However, he said, the incident was suspected to have stemmed from a longstanding dispute with his rivals.
“We will investigate the incident,” the OC said, adding that legal action would be taken following an autopsy after the body is brought back from Kushtia Medical College Hospital.
