The Coast Guard has seized 35,000kg of urea fertiliser in Chattogram’s Sitakunda while it was being loaded onto a cargo boat for smuggling to Myanmar.
The seizure was made around 1am on Wednesday near the Bashbaria Ghat area following a tip-off.
Coast Guard personnel from the Bhatyari station intercepted the fertiliser as it was being transferred from three trucks to a cargo boat.
A total of 700 sacks of urea fertiliser, along with the three trucks used for transportation, were seized. Two people were also detained in the operation.
The seized fertiliser is estimated to be worth around Tk24.5 lakh, according to the Coast Guard. Legal action against the seized goods, vehicles and detainees is underway.
The seizure comes amid reports of repeated attempts to smuggle subsidised fertiliser from Bangladesh to Myanmar through coastal routes.
