Six fishermen remain missing after a fishing trawler carrying 11 fishermen capsized in the rough waters of the Bay of Bengal off the coast of Rangabali in Patuakhali.

Five fishermen were rescued alive, but the remaining six are still unaccounted for two days after the incident.

The accident occurred around 10:00 pm on Sunday (July 5), about 60 kilometres south of the Maudubi area in Rangabali Upazila, while the trawler was fishing in the deep sea.

The rescued fishermen are Bayezid, Imadul Sikder, Nazmul, Rakib and Sajib.

The missing fishermen have been identified as Imadul Khan, Harun, Forkan, Sayed, Al-Amin and Akkas.

According to the survivors, the trawler, owned by Imadul Sikder of Kharida village in Galachipa Upazila’s Panpatti Union, left for the Bay of Bengal on Saturday (July 4) with 11 fishermen on board.

The trawler overturned and sank on Sunday night after being hit by strong currents and massive waves. The fishermen clung to parts of the wreckage and a buoy, drifting in the sea for nearly six hours.

At around 3:00 am, another fishing trawler owned by Imam Sikder from the same area spotted them and rescued the five survivors.
