Sagar-Runi’s son seeks justice at tribunal

Mahir Sarwar Megh, the only child of slain journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi, has approached the International Crimes Tribunal seeking justice for the murders of his parents.

Megh visited the tribunal accompanied by his maternal uncle Nausher Ali Roman, who filed the murder case following the killings in 2012.

Their visit came after International Crimes Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Aminul Islam recently said investigators had found a potentially significant lead concerning the case.

Sagar Sarwar, then news editor of Maasranga Television, and Runi, a senior reporter at ATN Bangla, were found murdered at their rented apartment in Dhaka’s West Rajabazar on February 11, 2012. Their son Megh was at the residence at the time.

The murder case has remained unresolved for more than 14 years.

The investigation has passed through several agencies, including the police, the Detective Branch and the Rapid Action Battalion.

A high-powered task force led by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) is currently handling the probe.

On August 27, a Dhaka court postponed the submission of the investigation report for the 129th time, setting September 30 as the next date.

The chief prosecutor has said the tribunal’s investigators came across clues related to the Sagar-Runi case while investigating another case.

However, he clarified that the murder itself does not fall under the jurisdiction of the International Crimes Tribunal because it is considered an individual, rather than a widespread or systematic, offence.

The case would therefore be tried by the relevant sessions court under existing law.
