A cocktail exploded on the Supreme Court premises shortly after seven leaders, including Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, were sentenced to death for crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising.
The explosion took place at around 1:18pm on Tuesday in front of the entrance used by the Chief Justice and other judges.
Police personnel on duty said they could not immediately identify who threw the cocktail and fled the scene. Security was tightened across the Supreme Court area following the incident.
Earlier on Tuesday, International Crimes Tribunal-2 sentenced seven leaders of the banned Awami League and its affiliated organisations to death in a case involving crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising.
A three-member tribunal, headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, delivered the verdict.
Those sentenced to death include former minister and Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Jubo League President Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, its General Secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, and banned Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain and General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Enan. All the accused are currently absconding.
The tribunal concluded arguments in the case on August 18 and kept it awaiting judgment. On Monday, September 14, Tuesday was fixed for delivering the verdict.
The cocktail blast immediately after the verdict created tension inside the court premises. No casualties or property damage were reported immediately after the incident.
