The Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) has spent Tk 32 million on bedbug control and cleaning across 18 residential halls, according to its one-year activity and accountability report released on Thursday.

DUCSU Vice-President Abu Sadiq Kayem presented the report at a press conference at the DUCSU building, outlining the union’s activities during its first year in office.

The report said Tk 30 million was spent on modernising the Shaheed Budhijibi Dr Mohammad Mortuza Medical Centre, while Tk 35 million was spent on renovating the university’s Central Mosque.

Another Tk 6.5 million was spent on constructing a modern gymnasium for female students.

Regarding the bedbug-control expenditure, DUCSU Health and Environment Secretary M M Al Minhaz said several firms had been approached, with some quoting as much as Tk 45–50 million and others offering lower bids. The work was awarded to a firm based on its reviews, he said.

He added that pest-control chemicals were applied in every room of all 18 residential halls, accounting for the cost.

The report also mentioned Tk 75.1 million collected for renovating risky halls.

However, DUCSU has not yet published a complete expenditure breakdown for all its activities.

Sadiq said the audit was still underway and detailed spending information would be released after its completion.

The report also highlighted initiatives including driving training, first-aid training, free spoken-English courses, research workshops, scholarship and higher-education sessions, and education expos.
