Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has assured that police will provide maximum cooperation to ensure a speedy trial in the murder of 13-year-old Ishayat Shahriar Opritom in Cumilla.
Speaking at a briefing on the law and order situation at the Secretariat on Sunday, the minister said the main suspects were arrested within 12 hours of Opritom going missing and evidence had been seized.
He said the prime suspect, Tuhin, had already confessed to the killing. The minister also said police would extend all necessary cooperation to ensure justice in Opritom’s murder, similar to the case involving Ramisha.
According to the minister, Opritom had been associating with members of a juvenile criminal group who were five to 10 years older than him. Police recovered Opritom’s iPhone from Tuhin, he said, adding that Tuhin had admitted responsibility for the killing.
Police detained three young men on Saturday in connection with the murder. After analysing CCTV footage from the area, police detained one suspect and, based on information obtained from him, took two others into custody.
The suspects were identified as Tuhin, son of Nurul Alam of Sananda area, and his associates Anas and Fahim Ahmed. Tuhin is the prime suspect.
Opritom had left home with his mother’s iPhone to take photographs with friends but never returned. His body was recovered a day later from deep inside the Lalmai Hills south of Cumilla University.
Opritom’s funeral prayers were held at Cumilla University on Sunday morning, followed by his burial at Gandhamati in Kotbari around 11:15am. University students, officials, employees and local residents attended the funeral amid a sombre atmosphere.
