State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit has said the government had no alternative but to raise fuel prices amid the ongoing crisis, while apologising to the public for the hardship caused by the decision.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists on Monday (September 21) about the adjustment of fuel prices.
The state minister said fuel prices had been rising steadily due to the situation in the Middle East, with the crisis taking a new turn every day. As a result, insurance premiums and shipping costs have also increased, he said.
“Given the circumstances, the government elected by the people had no alternative at this moment but to adjust fuel prices,” Amit said.
He said the government had repeatedly stated that it would not take such an unpopular decision unless there was no other option.
“It is extremely difficult to make such a decision. I entered politics with the intention of easing the hardships faced by the people. As a political worker, I understand the difficulties the people will face. For that reason, I sincerely apologise to the people,” he said.
Amit expressed hope that the ongoing crisis would ease soon. He said once the situation returned to normal, the government would seek to adjust fuel prices again and try to bring them back to the previous level or even lower.
