DHAKA: The Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) has arrested Md. Salman Islam Sakib alias Asif, 23, allegedly for his direct involvement in a cocktail-like bomb explosion in front of the main gate of the Supreme Court in the capital.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of DMP Niaz Mehedi disclosed the information on Monday (September 21).
According to him, at around 1:15pm on September 15, two individuals arrived on a motorcycle and allegedly detonated a cocktail-like explosive in front of the Supreme Court’s main gate with the intention of creating panic and carrying out sabotage. They then fled the scene.
Following the incident, a team from the DB’s Ramna Division began an investigation to identify those involved by analysing information technology data and intelligence. As part of the investigation, police conducted an operation in the Motijheel police station area on Sunday (September 20) and arrested Asif, whom they identified as being directly involved in the incident.
Niaz Mehedi said police also seized the motorcycle allegedly used in the incident.
Based on information obtained during the initial questioning of the arrested suspect, police later conducted an operation around 2:30am on Monday in the Beribadh area of Hazaribagh and recovered four unexploded cocktail-like objects, according to the DB.
Police said Asif had served as the joint general secretary of the Motijheel thana unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), which has been declared a banned organisation.
A case has been filed with Shahbagh Police Station in connection with the incident. The DB’s Ramna Division is continuing its operation to identify and arrest other individuals allegedly involved in the incident.
