DHAKA: The air quality in Bangladesh’s capital has improved significantly, with Dhaka ranking 34th among the world’s most polluted cities, according to the latest data released by international air quality monitoring platform IQAir on Tuesday (September 22).
Dhaka recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) score of 69, which falls under the “moderate” category.
According to the ranking, Lahore, Pakistan, topped the list with an AQI score of 208, indicating “very unhealthy” air quality. New Delhi, India, ranked second with a score of 191, while Hanoi, Vietnam, ranked third with a score of 184.
Jakarta, Indonesia, ranked fourth with an AQI score of 159, followed by Kuching, Malaysia, in fifth place with a score of 157. Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo; Johannesburg, South Africa; and Dubai, United Arab Emirates, ranked sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively, with AQI scores of 107.
With Dhaka’s AQI at 69, the health risks associated with air pollution are currently relatively low for city residents. Environmental experts believe that recent rainfall and changing weather conditions have helped reduce the concentration of harmful particles in the air.
