A 24-year-old construction worker was killed after a speeding private car mounted a footpath and ran him over in Dhaka’s Baridhara Diplomatic Zone on Tuesday.
Mehedi Hasan was sitting on the footpath of Road No. 1 around 5pm when the car suddenly drove onto it. He was crushed under the vehicle’s wheels and died on the spot.
People at the scene detained a teenager who was allegedly sitting in the driver’s seat. Police later took him into custody but released him after questioning.
However, the teenager was not named in the case filed over the accident. Instead, a man identified as Akash Mark, 44, was named as the driver of the car. He has reportedly been absconding since the incident.
The circumstances have raised questions over who was actually driving the vehicle at the time of the accident and why the teenager allegedly found in the driver’s seat was not named as an accused.
Mehedi Hasan, a native of Sonaray village in Domar upazila of Nilphamari, was working as a construction labourer in Dhaka.
