Police detained 624 people in a special overnight operation targeting suspected juvenile gangs and youths involved in anti-social activities across Comilla district.

The operation was conducted simultaneously in all 18 police stations of the district on Wednesday night.

Lutfur Rahman, additional superintendent of police and media officer of the district police, confirmed the matter on Thursday morning.

According to the police superintendent’s office, the operation was launched following reports of growing involvement of teenagers in various criminal activities. The drive was carried out on the instructions of Comilla Superintendent of Police Md Anisuzzaman.

Police conducted raids in different parts of Comilla city as well as areas under the 18 police stations where complaints of juvenile gang activity and harassment by unruly youths had been reported. Senior police officials also took part in the operation.

The 624 detainees are being screened to determine whether they have previous criminal records or links to criminal activities. Legal action will be taken against those found to be involved in crimes, police said.

Lutfur Rahman said legal proceedings were underway against the detainees based on the nature of any offences and their previous criminal records.

Police said such operations would continue regularly to prevent juvenile gang members from becoming involved in criminal activities and to curb harassment and disorder in different areas.
