A woman died and four members of the same family, including a child, remain missing after a trawler carrying passengers sank in the Meghna River in Sonargaon, Narayanganj, amid a storm on Thursday afternoon.
The accident occurred in the Sonamayi area of Baidyerbazar union in Sonargaon upazila. The passengers were residents of Homna upazila in Cumilla.
The missing passengers were identified as Helal Uddin, 55, Sajib, 24, Samia, 17, and five-year-old Samin.
According to local sources, 14 relatives had set out from Homna by trawler to attend a wedding in the Haria area of Sonargaon.
They were carrying wedding supplies, along with two cows and a goat as gifts.
When the trawler reached the Sonamayi area, it encountered rough weather and strong winds before sinking in the river.
Another trawler nearby rushed to the scene and rescued nine people alive. Raesa Begum was later recovered from the water and taken to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Dr Mostafizur Rahman Diganta, resident medical officer at Sonargaon Upazila Health Complex, said a woman was brought to the hospital but had died before arrival.
Abdullah Al Arefin, deputy director of the Narayanganj Fire Service, said a diving team reached the scene soon after receiving the report.
“Locals recovered one person dead, while four others remain missing,” he said.
The search operation was suspended for the night due to darkness and strong currents in the river. A full-scale rescue operation will resume Friday morning, he added.
