LNG supply has fallen again due to adverse weather in the Maheshkhali area of Cox’s Bazar, disrupting the transfer of imported liquefied natural gas from cargo vessels to floating terminals.
According to Petrobangla, the disruption has reduced overall gas supply below normal levels. As of 6pm on Thursday, the country’s total gas supply stood at 2,301 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd), including 1,615 mmcfd from domestic sources and 686 mmcfd from imported LNG.
LNG-based gas supply had been around 1,000 mmcfd in recent days. On September 21, the supply was 1,003 mmcfd, meaning it fell by about 32% to 686 mmcfd within three days.
Petrobangla said the transfer of LNG from imported cargoes to floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) in Maheshkhali was being hampered by the adverse weather.
It expressed regret for the temporary inconvenience and said gas supplies would return to normal as weather conditions improve.
The latest disruption comes after LNG supplies had gradually recovered following several interruptions over the past two months.
The reduced supply is likely to put additional pressure on the national gas network, particularly as the country’s daily gas demand is around 3,800 mmcfd.
