Portugal began their UEFA Nations League campaign with a 1-0 victory over Wales, thanks to a solitary goal from Joao Felix. However, captain Cristiano Ronaldo left the pitch frustrated after failing to score at Lisbon’s Jose Alvalade Stadium.
The 41-year-old Ronaldo returned to his former home ground in Lisbon for the first time in a year. Portugal took the lead in the 22nd minute when a long-range effort from Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr teammate Joao Felix deflected off a defender and found the net.
Ronaldo, however, endured a frustrating night in front of goal. He missed four good chances in the first half before sending the ball over the crossbar from just a few yards out early in the second half.
He later appeared to score from a Bruno Fernandes pass and celebrated with his trademark “Siu” celebration, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.
Portugal coach Jorge Jesus substituted Ronaldo in the 67th minute, with the captain appearing displeased as he left the field.
Explaining the decision, Jesus said fresh players were needed to maintain the tempo of the game. He added that although Ronaldo could have played another five to 10 minutes, his substitution had been planned in advance.
Wales had chances to equalise late in the match. Brennan Johnson’s effort struck the crossbar, while Ruben Dias produced an excellent defensive intervention to deny Louis Koumas.
Wales put up strong resistance despite Portugal registering 23 shots.
After the match, Wales coach Craig Bellamy praised his players for their courage against a Portugal squad he described as exceptionally valuable.
Portugal will face Norway in their second match on Sunday, giving Ronaldo another opportunity to move closer to his target of scoring 1,000 career goals.
