BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has said his party and its affiliated Jatiyatabadi Olama Dal will build resistance against forces seeking to undermine Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty and turn the country into a “client state”.
He made the remarks at a protest rally organised by Jatiyatabadi Olama Dal at the north gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in Dhaka after Friday prayers.
“There is no place in this country for forces opposed to the country, democracy, independence and sovereignty,” Rizvi said. “Those who want to colonise Bangladesh or turn it into a client state will face strong resistance from BNP and Jatiyatabadi Olama Dal.”
Rizvi also praised Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly, saying he had called for disputes to be resolved through dialogue, diplomacy, education and humanity rather than weapons.
He said Tarique had also reaffirmed Bangladesh’s support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state and called for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh to return to their homeland with dignity.
Rizvi said people around the world wanted peace rather than war, as conflicts raise the prices of food, fuel and other essentials and disrupt economic activity.
He accused unnamed groups of trying to destabilise Bangladesh by setting vehicles on fire and disrupting the country’s democratic process.
Rizvi claimed that BNP had come to power through a free and fair election, not through a “fixed” or “midnight” election, and said the government was working for public welfare and social protection.
The rally was held against what organisers described as “planned attempts to destabilise the country through violence”.
Rizvi reiterated that BNP and its allies would resist any attempt to undermine the country’s sovereignty.
Following the rally, participants brought out a protest procession from the north gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.
