Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has called for concerted international action, fair climate financing and stronger adaptation capacity to address the existential threats posed by rising sea levels.
He made the call while addressing a high-level meeting titled “High-level Meeting to Address the Existential Threats Posed by Sea-Level Rise” at Conference Room 4 of the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
In his address, Tarique highlighted the multidimensional and existential threats posed by sea-level rise to coastal and island nations as well as other climate-vulnerable countries.
He stressed the need for coordinated international efforts to address the impacts of climate change, equitable financing, stronger adaptation capacity and effective international cooperation for countries affected by climate-related impacts.
The high-level meeting was held on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Heads of state and government and representatives of relevant international organisations from different countries attended the meeting.
