BANGKOK: Heavy rainfall has caused widespread flooding in Thailand’s capital Bangkok, prompting Governor Chadchart Sittipunt to declare the city an emergency flood disaster area on Saturday.
Thailand’s Meteorological Department has warned of thunderstorms in Bangkok and surrounding areas throughout the weekend.
According to CNN, around 300 millimeters (12 inches) of rain fell across Bangkok over the past 48 hours, flooding major roads. In some areas, vehicles were partially submerged, while residents were forced to wade through waist-deep water.
Governor Chadchart said the situation posed a risk to human lives and could also damage public and private property. Areas around canals and waterways have been particularly badly affected.
The Thai military has launched relief efforts, including setting up shelters and field kitchens. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has designated several schools as temporary shelters and urged residents to avoid going outside unless necessary.
Supermarkets across Bangkok have also seen crowds as residents stock up on essential supplies amid concerns over further flooding.
