A meeting of representatives of seven Qawmi-oriented Islamic parties began at Jamia Azizul Uloom Babunagar in Fatikchhari, Chattogram, on Sunday to finalise a framework for political unity among the parties.

The meeting began around 11am with Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh Ameer Allama Shah Muhibbullah Babunagari.

Designated representatives of the seven parties are taking part in the meeting. The framework is expected to be finalised based on their views and discussions, after which Babunagari is expected to announce the outcome.

Islami Andolan Bangladesh central leader Mufti Rezaul Karim Abrar and Hefazat Joint Secretary General Maulana Azizul Haque Islamabadi, who attended the meeting, confirmed the development to Kalbela.

The parties have submitted separate proposals on the nature of the proposed unity, political strategy and organisational structure. Whether the parties in the alliance will be allowed to remain part of other political alliances is also among the issues under discussion.

A seven-member subcommittee formed by Hefazat discussed the separate proposals at a meeting at Hathazari Madrasa on September 1. It subsequently completed work on a draft framework by coordinating the proposals, but the draft has not yet been formally presented to representatives of the seven parties.

Hefazat Central Organising Secretary Mufti Bashirullah previously told Kalbela that the coordination process had been undertaken to develop the framework.

The formal process for the seven-party unity began on July 16 with a meeting of the parties’ leaders at Jamia Azizul Uloom Babunagar, chaired by Hefazat Ameer Shah Muhibbullah Babunagari. The leaders agreed in principle to work together in the future.

The seven parties were subsequently asked to submit their proposals, following which Hefazat formed a seven-member subcommittee to review and coordinate them.

The seven parties are Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh, Khelafat Majlis, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis, Bangladesh Khelafat Andolan, Islami Oikya Jote and Bangladesh Nezame Islam Party.
