KURIGRAM: A BNP leader was arrested with 74 yaba tablets in Ulipur of Kurigram, and the local unit of the party later temporarily suspended him from his party post and all activities.
The arrestee, Afzal Hossain, 42, is the joint convener of Hatia Union BNP. District Detective Branch (DB) police arrested him during a raid at his home in the Purana Anantapur Bazar area of the union on Sunday afternoon.
Kurigram DB Officer-in-Charge Rezaul Karim said Afzal was arrested with 74 yaba tablets as part of an anti-drug drive. A case has been filed against him in connection with the incident.
The Ulipur upazila BNP issued a letter on Sunday night announcing his temporary suspension from his party post and all activities. The letter, signed by Upazila BNP Convener Tariq Abul Ala Chowdhury and Member Secretary Haider Ali Mia, said his arrest over a drug-related allegation was inconsistent with the party’s policies, ideology, discipline and image.
Hatia Union BNP Convener Faruk Ahmed said such activities were harmful to the party.
Ulipur Upazila BNP Convener Tariq Abul Ala Chowdhury said no one involved in wrongdoing by using the party’s name would be spared. He added that if anyone else was found to be involved, organisational action would be taken against them following an investigation.
