MADARIPUR: A Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) leader named Taizul Islam has been relieved of all organisational activities after an objectionable video allegedly showing him with a woman went viral on social media in Shibchar, Madaripur.
The information was announced in a press release signed by Yusuf Howlader, secretary of Shibchar upazila Jamaat, on Tuesday afternoon. However, the release did not mention Taizul Islam’s specific organisational position.
The video began circulating on social media on Monday.
According to local sources, the incident took place at Taizul Islam’s home in Paschim Charkamarkandi village of Nilakhi Union in the upazila around noon on Sunday. The video reportedly began spreading that evening.
Mohammad Sarwar Hossain Mridha, chief of Shibchar upazila Jamaat, said many people had expressed interest in joining Jamaat after August 5, 2024. As Nilakhi Union is far from the upazila headquarters, Taizul Islam had been assigned responsibility for the party’s publicity activities. Locals considered him the union president because of his role, he added.
Mridha said Taizul Islam had been relieved of all organisational activities after the allegations came to light. Appropriate action would be taken in accordance with party rules if the allegations were proven, he added.
Locals alleged that Taizul Islam had long been providing purported treatment through blessed water and exorcism.
Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad, imam of a local mosque and a madrasa teacher, alleged that Taizul Islam used to bring women to his home on the pretext of providing treatment and engage in immoral activities with them.
Taizul Islam could not be reached for comment as he had reportedly gone into hiding after the incident. However, a post on his Facebook account claimed that the woman was his wife.
